First Annual Meeting Of The Minds Festival, Saturday, October 25

When Phil Pironne gets involved in a project, he doesn’t clock in, knock it out and clock out with nary a care when the day’s done. To the contrary, the guy is über-passionate about the work he does—whether it’s performing in the Casket Salesmen, running his Longhair Illuminati record label or, more recently, throwing festivals in the city of Chino. He’s diligent, persistent (he’s got our office phone ringing off the freakin’ hook) and executes his vision to the best of his ability. The litmus test of his first attempt, the indiscriminately dubbed Longhair Illuminati Festival, did well enough to warrant an offshoot less than three months later. Enter the first annual Meeting of the Minds Festival, which on paper looks real similar to the music and arts party that Pironne spearheaded in August. His eclectic, decidedly underground musical tastes will be on full display (with a welcomed bias towards locally-grown talent) as he’s handpicked Jubilee—a fairly great, straightforward melodic rock outfit fronted by Icarus Line/Nine Inch Nails guitarist Aaron North—to headline the outdoor stage. Free The Robots are scheduled to headline the indoor/bar stage and the psych-jam metal band Earthless is another must-see, with the incessant propulsion of former Rocket From The Crypt slammer Mario Rubalcaba. Pironne’s own aforementioned Casket Salesmen will also perform—their last show in “a long time,” as they head for the studio—as will IE natives Henheart, GrEwVaNgLe, Ojos Rojos, Auditory Aphasia, Mongoloid, Marques LaFelt and Sean of The Dead. And if all that wasn’t enough, there’s an art walk, food vendors, full bar, acrobatics and more to keep your flashbacks of three months ago at the same venue in check. Still, if you’re not convinced that he’s ambitious enough, Pironne’s already planning a multi-week national tour of this sort of thing. That’s passion, kids—now, go get yourselves some.
