Passion Pit

Passion Pit

at the Fox Theater, Sat, Dec. 12

It only took a year and a half for Passion Pit to become the band that no iTunes addict could live without. But even in a time where viral Internet buzz is all it takes to deliver scores of mediocre MySpace bands from the depths of obscurity, Passion Pit prove that page hits are no substitute for hit songs. Fraught with falsetto vocals and quivering synth brilliance, this Bostonian five-piece cannibalizes elements of electro-pop, disco decadence and cardigan-sporting indie rock. Regardless of labels, it’s obvious that few college radio stations were prepared for the squall of support behind their debut full-length, Manners, (released this past May on Frenchkiss/Colombia UK). But even before that, during the construction of their Chunk of Change EP a year before, this group of recovering guitar players was wowing East Coast crowds with sing-along hooks, keyboards and MPC skills that could put some hip-hop artists to shame. These days, they’ve taken hipster anthems like “The Reeling,” “Sleepyhead” and “Little Secrets” to mammoth concerts and festivals all over the world. This week, as the band rolls into the Fox Theater Pomona, expect Passion Pit to drown the original, Depression-era architecture of the Grand Hall in the sweaty energy of a band with enough potential to survive the ebb and flow of viral fame well into the second chapter of the 2000s.
