Mix America’s oldest sporting event with the Old West plus thousands of bad-ass, beer-gulping fans with an appetite for bucking and broncing and . . . the result is organized chaos. For those of you game, gather up your Stetsons, spurs, and cowboy gear and hop onto your steeds—the San Dimas Western Days are back. This is the place where the best cowpokes—all members of the largest touring circuit of cowboy pros—compete for a piece of the prize money. Back in the saddle are the six main competitions; the roughstock (bareback riding, saddle bronc and bull riding), and the timed (tie down roping, barrel racing and steer wrestling) events. Initial rounds in each category begin Saturday with the top scorers riding and roping for glory on Sunday.  

The festivities will also include a dedicated Kid’s Korral for the youngsters, a craft, food and art show, live performances by the Painted Magic Drill Team, and Native American pow-wows and cowboy re-enactments. An adults-only Casino Night and Little Miss San Dimas Contest will be presided over by the newly crowned First Lady of Rodeo, Maegen Ridley of Alta Loma. On the final day, Pastor Bob Harris leads his cowboy congregation with services at 9AM and follows up with hosting duties at Challenged Buckaroos, a special rodeo for the disabled. 

The San Dimas Western Days Rodeo takes place October 4–5 at the Tex Shoemaker Rodeo Arena in Horsethief Park. Gates open at 11AM on both days, with competition beginning at 2PM. Yee haw! (Nancy Powell)
