The Auld Dubliner
For anyone who wants to know how the village drunkard in some early Irish novel might’ve felt when cutoff hit at the pub, The Auld Dubliner is the only bar to swagger out of. With every label of Johnny Walker at arm’s reach (Blue label costs $32 a glass), the Murphy’s on the mix and Guinness and Smithwick’s on tap, the Dubliner has brought the authenticity of a cottage pub so close you can smell the corned beef and cabbage. Wassail! (John Waterman)

Back Abbey
The Back Abbey in Claremont has only been open a few months but it’s already established itself as a no-frills bar force to be reckoned with, serving primarily Belgian beers, ales and food. Of the literally dozens of European suds available, the Buffalo Stout emerges as an easy champion, especially when served with traditional Belgian mussel soup and pommes frites blanched in duck fat. In the fall look for dry-aged rib-eye steak on the weekends. Open Monday through Saturday from 11:00am until closing. Closed Sundays. (Kevin Ausmus)

Black Watch Pub
The Black Watch may be not only your father’s pub, but quite possibly your grandfather’s pub—especially if Gramps was a British ex-pat with a fondness for English Premier League soccer. The Black Watch staples are the same as they ever were: ales, stouts, wines (no hard booze), live music and a huge side-room devoted exclusively to darts, with real dartboards and actual chalk. But the soccer is the thing, with subscriptions to Setanta Sports, which airs everything from World Cup qualifying to rugby to Aussie rules and even Gaelic football. Cheers, mate! (Kevin Ausmus)

British Bull Dog
The Bull Dog continues to survive and thrive despite one of the worst locations for any local pub—buried in the back of a nondescript mini-mall wedged in between a yogurt shop and a sewing retailer. Still, anyone with a nose for Dinkum Burgers or Aussie Pies or other kind of Australian cuisine inevitably wind up at the Bull Dog here and then, and it’s a refuge for darts and pool, not to mention a low-key place to catch the game, suck down a cider, or listen to jazz music (available three times a week). Just don’t let the owner hear you cursing or you are out on your arse mate! (Kevin Ausmus)

Characters
Though downtown Pomona has changed much over the years, one thing has remained the same—a bar named Characters. Though they tore out the old bar years ago, the one with the names of their Hall of Fame drinkers on it, Characters retains its reputation as a pre-eminent sports bar. The darts here are so serious that there’s competitive league play and a wide selection of dart flights, shafts and other accessories for sale. Live music on Fridays and Saturdays or, and this is something, Guitar Hero Karaoke on Sundays. (Kevin Ausmus)

Charlie Jewels
A corner haunt with a full bar and tons on tap, including the local Redlands hops & barley micro-genius, Hangar 24 ale? For sure. A segue—remember how Johnny Cash had done a lot of bad things in life but held his head high because he never picked cotton (like his mother did, and his brother did…)? Well, you can be a rotten SOB in life but still feel proud in that you had one of those orange wheats. (George Donovan)

Chronic Cantina
If there’s any place that can make Hooter’s seem like a bit of Sarah Palin-inspired quaint Americana, it’s Chronic Cantina in Upland. With a phalanx of plasmas and an all-female staff whose attire leaves something to the imagination (but not a lot), Chronic is the über-extreme Sports Bar of the 21st Century. Though no dance poles can be spotted, every night sports some kind of testosterone-laced hormonal special, with S&M demos mingling with replays of Terrell Owens end-zone dances. All this and tacos too, plus local bands on Wednesdays. (Kevin Ausmus)

Club 215
When a buddy is lagging, you’ve heard the age-old expression, “do we need to put a nipple on that thing?” At Club 215, well, yeah—a beer goes nice with a nipple. It’s dark in here, with a few neon streams striking the aureoles and cheekbones. Lacey things, soft feline friends, and fifteen-dollar lap dances are highlights. Five-buck appetizers, too—such as the corn dogs, which has more Freudian innuendo than Fay Wray being forced up that Empire State Building (phallus) in the original King Kong. As the bartender Lindsey says, “it’s like Cheers, people come and get fugged up.” Amen, sister. (Chuck Mindenhall)

Deanes
Sometimes the forces of the universe converge on a place, allowing that single space to retain the absolute essence of everything it’s supposed to. If it’s dive bar essence you’re trying to capture, Deanes Of Cucamonga’s got that divey seediness in its DNA. Here you’ll find everything dive-worthy: cheap drinks (half-priced drinks on Mondays, making your Newcastle less than $3), pool tables, a good jukebox and haplessly feisty patrons who are equally as likely to buy you a drink as they are to tell you to go fuck yourself. Espiau’s
Though sometimes overlooked as a full service bar, Espiau’s in Claremont has been quietly upping the ante for quite a while now, with a rotating trio of popular house bands providing live music that can be heard in every corner of the east Village. And now the Cantina at Espiau’s has a new wrinkle for the bleary-eyed hankering to ditch their weekend hangover . . . the Sunday morning Bloody Mary bar, where you can sip Grey Goose vodka Mary’s, a more basic Seagram’s Mary or create your own (depending on the quality/state of your hangover). With some shredded beef chimichangas, what a way to start the day. (Kevin Ausmus)

The Flamingo
It hasn’t changed a lick (‘cept for some new ceiling paint) since the late Barbara Hyman opened The Flamingo in 1971—and things are still just as Bukowskian as ever. This joint, which is also known as the Dirty Birdy, has shuffleboard, pinball, foosball, a juker and a perpetual happy hour ($2 shots/$2.50 drafts). This is a real bar; no pink in front of the flamingo, no food is served except a few measly snacks. It’s the kind of place people sit and talk and look for sparks at the bottom of each bottle. Caution: Act up and you’ll be escorted to Asshole Alley, so mind your manners. (Braxton Leeds)

Friar Tuck’s
Friar Tuck’s castles-to-the-sky architecture harkens back to the heyday of Route 66 (and could use a fresh coat of paint) but inside, with its Beer Pong, 20+ plasma televisions and never-ending stream of heavy metal bands on the weekends, the vibe is anything but ancient. Tuck’s has drink specials and live music or DJ’s every night, yet nary a cover. Lingerie shows Mondays and Wednesdays during happy hour go swimmingly well with drinks like “Injector Shots” and “Purple Hooters,” and Tuesday nights are devoted to “Bonging the Bud” with a group named Inhale. Hard Hats Sports Bar (Norco)
Um, whenever somebody tells us that there’re “Lingerie Parties” held the last Wednesday of every month we are so there, dude. Bikini bars are one thing; lingerie isn’t for a usual public, it’s more personal. You know, when the mercury rises in a man’s animal nature, when the thermometer begins rising in unfathomable places and a girl with a bunny tail flits about, we wonder why Hard Hats and not Hard . . . something else . . . and yet, we go for the beer. Hi-Brow Pomona
The Hi-Brow has been around so long that college kids now patronize it because their parents got silly drunk there years before. Stiff drinks are still on the menu at the Hi-Brow, along with electronic darts, a couple of television screens and a pool table (sadly, where the vinyl foam booths used to be). You won’t starve at the Hi-Brow, not with Taco Tuesdays, Steak Fridays and (ahem) Meat Loaf Wednesday’s, all home-cooked. Live music is a thing of the past here, but Patsy Cline is still on the jukebox, which suits a three-sheeter just fine. (Kevin Ausmus)

Sometimes, on just the right night, walking into the Hip Kitty feels like you are smack dab in the middle of a David Lynch movie, what with the lone lounge singer at the piano and a handful of colorful patrons sipping wine and savoring fondue amidst a dark lavender-tinged palette. Other nights are packed with swingers—the dance hall variety, not key-swappers—bopping to Hip Kitty’s exclusive menu of jazz music, with a hint of burlesque at the margins. Full bar service, but cover charges from Thursday thru Saturday. Opens 6:30pm nightly, closed on Sunday and Monday. (Kevin Ausmus)

The Press
There’s one thing about the Press Restaurant and Bar that hasn’t changed in over 10 years of business—if you want to watch games or play games, you’re out of luck. The walls of the Press are covered with artwork in the place of plasma TV’s, and there’s not a pool table in sight. The Press is the class, and it’s all about the full bar, live music and still-popular potato taquitos. Half off bottles of wine on Wednesday gets us over the hump; every other Thursday is the Baldy Mountain Jazz group; and in a nod to the crazies who have kept the doors open, the Press now serves its own Half-Wit Wheat Hefeweizen. Redlands Underground
Love a joint that feels hidden and tucked away, like the one-time speakeasy Chumley’s in New York? Redlands Underground is it. Owner Patrick “Poncho” Visguilo is a former New Englander, and that’s sort of what he sought, too. “I wanted a place with a cozy but not stiff vibe.” The way to do that is to have an intimate bar area, white Christmas lights down the stairs, fat couches, free WiFi and $2 drink specials. As for food? A million times better than you’ll get at Long John Silver’s—in fact, we’re embarrassed to mention the two in the same sentence. (Braxton Leeds)

Stop In
This is blue-collar power-freaking, people. Orange city worker vests and graveyard shifters come in to fracture up reality and nurse the calluses at this highwayside bar—the kind of place you pass a million times off the 215 and never stop in. But you should. Because “it’s much more welcoming on the inside,” says the green-eyed bartender Angie. One of the reasons for that is Angie herself, a halo in hell. The other is the anti-septically lit pool table, cheap drinks and the kinds of Tales From the Barstool that convince a lonely earthly being that he ain’t alone. (Chuck Mindenhall)

Tartan of Redlands
Got to love a place with a fire-pit right there in the entrance challenging every ingrained Feng Shui neuroticism in the book, but when you’ve been around 43 years you’re a classic beyond new-age reproach. Tartan is the kind of old-school joint you drink gimlets and say “see-see” after everything, a Redlands Musso & Frank’s with red upholstery and meat. Come to think of it—it’s everything right with the world. (George Donovan)

Worthington’s Tavern
A good beer bar is hard to find. It seems that the same properties that cause cocktails to loosen up inhibitions and chase out social awkwardness is a little under-developed in beer and wine. Although Worthington’s Tavern eschews the cocktails in favor of a cheaper alcohol license, they make up for it by providing other social lubricants. Good tuneseverything from obscure ’80s to Daft Punkand a dance floor with people actually dancing make up for the lack of hard booze. (But just barely.) (Phil Fuller)

The Yard House
Even with the world’s largest selection of draft beer the Yard House still comes up short with their half-yard novelty glasses. But then again, when you’re talking about over 110 different kinds of beer it’s not customary to argue semantic, but when you say yard we expect precisely three feet of booze. (John Waterman)
