Honky Tonk Love
Northeast of the Inland Empire proper, up in the beautiful, high desert is one of the most unique cultural outlets in all of Southern California. It is Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace. It bills itself as the “Best Honky Tonk West of The Mississippi” and the bands that have filled its stages over the years make that seem like a reasonable moniker. The main bent of most of the bands is a rootsy, rusty, outlaw style of country music that is as pure American as the gorgeously desolate surroundings. The wonderful vibe and ambience of the Palace itself is worth checking out, part biker bar, part country hoedown hall, They also serve killer grub and have a great bar that many hipster joints in the city would be hard pressed to match. So if you are looking to be warmed up this winter, grab a love or a pal and head up to Pioneertown for a warm atmosphere and food, smoking hot music, for upcoming bands and to drool at the menu. It’s Getting Heat in Here

Why wait for the summer music festival season (Warped, Street Scene, Rock the Bells, et al) when you can start mainlining live music straight to your ear holes right now. Well, February actually. That’s when the cool cats over at UC Riverside are busting out with their annual Heat Music Festival. Unless you’re criminally and socially inept, you’ve likely caught on that fest organizers have been able to snag some pretty freakin‘ cool acts of late. Last year, N*E*R*D and She Wants Revenge were part of the lineup. This year, it’s those emo-rock boys in Taking Back Sunday, The Crystal Method spinning a live set and jerkin’ sensation (sporting a Hesperia zip code no less) act New Boyz. If you’re feeling really adventurous, why not (gasp) leave the IE for a spell and get your butt over to the third annual Musink Tattoo Convention & Music Festival, where punk all-stars like NOFX, Face to Face, the Damned and the Buzzcocks will be providing you with incentive to go shirtless in the mosh pit and show off that “Bro 4 Life” tat. Or not. (Matt Tapia)

Pipes Dreams

After American Idol gets old and you’ve sang just about every damn song at your local watering hole’s karaoke machine, don’t you think it’s time to see if you really have What It Takes? If so, you might consider placing yourself at the mercy of Inland Icon, the annual solo vocal and concert competition that separates the men from the boys—actually, the winners from the finalists, but you get the picture. This is the third year for this vocalpalooza and it’s definitely skewed toward the young-uns (ages 7-18) striving to reach their Paula Abdul dreams. So if you already look like Adam Lambert and just want to see if you can sing like him, this might be the place to show off your pipes—and your Goo Goo Dolls haircut. (James Abraham)

Inland Icon, qualifying audition dates scheduled for Fri, Jan. 23 at Dos Lagos Amphitheater, The Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos, 2780 Cabot Dr., Corona; Jan. 30, Promenade Temecula, 40820 Winchester Rd., Temecula; (951) 371-5239, www.inlandicon.com.
